Yoga for
Beginners
You know all about
yoga, right? You’ve probably heard that it’s great for
improving flexibility, that it’s good for your mental and
emotional well-being, and that it can even improve your sex
life. Even yoga for beginners! But did you know it’s also
highly effective for weight loss? Well it is! A
2005 study found that overweight people who practiced yoga
tended on average to lose weight over time, while overweight
people who did not practice yoga tended to gain weight over the
same period. While the amount of weight lost wasn’t huge, the
effectiveness of yoga for weight loss was clearly demonstrated
by this study.
Learn About Yoga For
Beginners
The strange thing about yoga
and weight loss is that
exactly why
it is effective for
weight loss is largely unknown. Yoga is a gentle
activity, and almost any other forms of aerobic exercise
will burn more calories hour-for-hour than yoga. In fact,
even an hour of walking will burn almost twice as many
calories as an hour of yoga.
So what
accounts for yoga’s weight loss properties over longer periods
of time? Experts think that the most likely answer is that yoga
promotes an awareness of the body in a way that other types of
exercise don’t. This makes sense, as yoga’s stretches and
exercises are all about getting in touch with your body and
making it do unusual things – such as contort it into a
pretzel! Besides which, it’s often done in front of a mirror.
Yoga can’t fail to make you more aware of your body, and
therefore to make you think about how you are treating it and
what you are putting into it. This has all kinds of flow-on
benefits that promote weight loss, such as healthier
eating.
Anyway, if
you’re interested in losing weight, it’s probably more
important to you just to know what works, rather than exactly
why something works. We can safely say: yes, yoga
works!
If you’ve
never tried yoga before, the idea of getting into a leotard and
baring all with a group of strangers might seem rather
off-putting at first. It needn’t. Yoga studios are constantly
full of beginners trying it for the first time. In fact, most
studios will hold beginner classes where you can learn the
basics with a group of other novices. If you’re still feeling
shy, take a friend with you, or even better, take your
significant other – it’s a great activity to do as a
couple.
In order to
get the best weight loss results possible, yoga should be
practiced at least weekly, and preferably in the morning. The
most common type of yoga is Hatha yoga, and this is the best
for beginners as it is relatively gentle. Once you become more
proficient at the basics, you might want to try a more physical
form, such as Ashtanga, Bikram, or power yoga. These forms will
give you the same benefits in terms of body awareness, but will
also provide a more intense workout with an emphasis on
strength and flexibility.
