Fun Ways to Exercise

Do you find yourself dreading going to the gym, and trying to think of excuses for not going so you can avoid it without feeling guilty? Why isn’t there fun ways to exercise? Let’s face it going to the gym the last thing you feel like doing after a day at work. You might feel bad about it, but it’s really perfectly natural to feel that way. What’s fun or attractive about a smelly gym full of other people who also don’t want to be there?Exercise for MenExercise for Women

If this feels like you, it’s time to refocus, and consider giving the gym a break in favor of an activity that you’ll enjoy. The key here is ‘engage the mind, and the body will follow’. The best exercise is the kind that you don’t even realize you’re doing. Some activities won’t burn as many calories, hour-for-hour, as working out on a treadmill, but activities that you like and keep doing because you enjoy them are always going to be more effective for weight loss than activities you hate, and quit doing after the first couple of months.

Here are four fun ways to exercise to get you started:

1 Martial Arts

If you’ve never been to a martial arts class, you probably picture them being a bit like in the movies: a lot of shouting and people getting into fights! The reality, thankfully, is very different. Martial arts are practiced by people of all ages with a huge variety of body types and backgrounds.

One of the best things about martial arts as an exercise activity is the sheer range of options available. It would take a very long article indeed to go through all of the different styles, but three of the most common martial arts are: karate, which is a kicking and punching art; judo, which focuses on throws and wrestling, and which is also an Olympic sport; and kickboxing, which is a very physical martial art with the emphasis on getting into the ring.

2. Yogayoga

Yes, yoga! Yoga is not normally thought of as a good exercise for weight loss, but although a session of yoga doesn’t burn many calories, it promotes a body awareness that translates to increased weight loss in everyday life.

3 Dancing

Professional ballet dancers are fitter on most measures than professional swimmers. Dancing is a fantastic workout, because it is good for both endurance and strength. And best of all, it’s a fun social activity that will keep you motivated. If you’re a little shy, take a friend or two to your first class to get you started. The best dances for weight loss tend to be the fast ones, such jazz, lindy hop or hip-hop. If you’re not into the public type of dancing, then turn up the stereo at home with your favorite c.d. and start, or go into an unoccupied room of the house with your i-pod and go for it!

4 Table Tennis

Those little bats, ping-pong balls, and the ‘swish-pock-swish’ of a good rally: what’s not to love about table tennis? It burns as many calories as a brisk walk, and unlike other racquet sports, it’s easy to play even for novices. Besides, which would you rather do: 30 minutes on the stepper at the gym, or an epic table tennis match against a friend, loser makes dinner? If you can’t find a table to play on, they’re not expensive to buy, and it will definitely see a lot more use than the latest ab-blaster from the Home Shopping channel!

These are just four fun ways to exercise there are so many others that, no doubt, you can think of. Just ask yourself what you would want to do that involves movement and that you would consider to be fun ways to exercise, then go do it.
